5 Essential Tips for Maintaining Healthy Soil in Your Garden

healthy soil

Soil sometimes gets a bad rep. Yes, okay, my mum had to wash stains off my school uniform far more often than she would have liked... but I'd argue it was good for me and my immune system!

Soil is the foundation for all life

All of nature starts with soil. But what is it? Soil is a mixture of organic matter, minerals, gases, liquids, and organisms that support life as we know it! Earthworms get all the credit, but a lot of the work is done by tiny creatures we can't even see! Did you know there are more microorganisms in a single teaspoon of soil than people on the planet?

Having a flourishing garden starts with nurturing healthy soil. Often overlooked, soil health is the foundation upon which vibrant plants thrive.

Urban living

Unfortunately, soil has become overlooked, especially in urban environments where concrete towers and tarmac roads cover our natural environment. While this makes it easier to get to places, it is gradually moving us further and further away from what we need to survive - trees, birds, and fungi, for example - not fast food, exhaust fumes, and unfulfilling jobs.

Globally, over 50% of our soils are classed as degraded. If you want to cultivate a verdant paradise in your garden, consider the five essential tips below for maintaining healthy soil.

Enhancing your soil - follow these five easy tips!

1. Stop using artificial fertilisers

While artificial fertilisers can provide a quick nutrient boost to plants, they often come with detrimental long-term consequences for soil health. These fertilisers can disrupt the delicate balance of microorganisms in the soil, leading to nutrient imbalances and decreased fertility over time. Instead, opt for organic alternatives like compost or natural soil amendments, which provide a slow-release of nutrients and support the overall health of the soil ecosystem.

2. Stop using chemical pesticides

Chemical pesticides not only harm pests but also beneficial organisms in the soil, such as earthworms and beneficial microbes. Over time, the repeated use of chemical pesticides can degrade soil health and disrupt the ecosystem's natural balance. Embrace integrated pest management techniques, such as companion planting and attracting beneficial insects, to control pests while minimizing harm to soil organisms.

3. Adopt no dig methods

Tilling and digging disrupt the soil structure, leading to compaction and erosion. No dig gardening methods, such as lasagna gardening or mulching, promote soil health by preserving its natural structure and minimizing disturbance. By allowing the soil to develop its own rich ecosystem of microorganisms, earthworms, and fungi, you can improve soil fertility and water retention while reducing the need for additional inputs.

4. Start turning your food and green waste into compost

Composting is a simple yet powerful way to recycle organic matter and enrich your soil. By composting kitchen scraps, green waste, and other organic materials, you can create nutrient-rich humus that improves soil structure, fertility, and moisture retention. Incorporating compost into your garden beds provides a steady supply of essential nutrients and encourages the growth of beneficial soil organisms, promoting overall soil health and plant vitality.

5. Add natural soil-enhancing ingredients

To further boost soil health, consider incorporating natural soil amendments such as organic mulch, biochar, or rock dust. Organic mulch not only conserves moisture and suppresses weeds but also adds organic matter to the soil as it breaks down. Biochar improves soil structure and enhances nutrient retention, while rock dust replenishes essential minerals and trace elements. By supplementing your soil with these natural ingredients, you can enhance its fertility and resilience, supporting healthy plant growth and abundant harvests.

My own blend of Natural Soil Enhancer can be purchased in the shop and contains a unique blend of UK-grown organic seaweed, worm castings, biochar, mycorrhizal fungi, rhizobacteria, and barley malt extract. If you'd like to learn more about what these ingredients do, click here. The blend is also included in the Natural Grow Kit.

In conclusion...

Maintaining healthy soil is essential for cultivating a thriving garden ecosystem. By following these five tips—avoiding artificial fertilisers and pesticides, adopting no dig methods, composting organic waste, and incorporating natural soil enhancers—you can nourish your soil and create the ideal growing conditions for your plants. With a little care and attention, you'll soon reap the rewards of bountiful harvests and vibrant, flourishing gardens.
